Frequently asked questions
Chesapeake Bay Psychiatry FAQ
Starting psychiatric care often comes with a lot of practical questions. Here are answers to the ones we hear most often.
Getting started
Are you accepting new patients?
Yes. Appointment availability varies, so we recommend reaching out as soon as possible.
Do you see children?
Yes. We see children ages 7 and older.
What happens at the first appointment?
The first visit is a psychiatric evaluation. We review symptoms, history, medications, treatment goals, and recommended next steps.
How much notice do I need to cancel or reschedule?
Please notify the office by 10:00 AM Eastern the business day before the appointment to avoid a late fee.
What counts as a no-show?
If you do not attend the appointment and do not contact the office before the appointment time, the visit may be treated as a no-show and the full appointment fee may apply.
Insurance and pricing
Do you accept insurance?
No. We are a self-pay practice and do not bill insurance directly.
Can I use out-of-network benefits?
If you have a PPO or POS plan with out-of-network benefits, we can provide a superbill for possible reimbursement. We cannot guarantee reimbursement.
Do you accept Medicare or Medicaid?
No.
How much does care cost?
- Initial evaluation: $250.
- Follow-up appointments: $140 for 30 minutes and $220 for 60 minutes.
- ADHD testing and results review: $475.
- Medical weight management typically ranges from $400 to $600 per month depending on medication and dosage.
Telehealth and locations
Do you offer telehealth appointments?
Yes. Telehealth is available to patients who are physically located in Virginia at the time of the appointment.
Do you see North Carolina patients?
We do not provide telehealth appointments when the patient is physically located in North Carolina. Patients traveling from Northeast North Carolina may request an in-person appointment.
What do I need for a telehealth appointment?
A reliable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and a private place for the visit.
Therapy and testing
Do you offer psychological or neuropsychological testing?
No. Chesapeake Bay Psychiatry does not offer psychological or neuropsychological testing. We do offer ADHD testing when clinically appropriate. If more extensive psychological or neuropsychological testing is needed, we can help direct patients to appropriate resources.
Do you offer therapy?
No. Chesapeake Bay Psychiatry does not offer therapy. We specialize in psychiatric evaluation and medication management. When therapy would be helpful, we refer patients to therapy practices whose clinicians are well known to us and trusted to take excellent care of our patients.
Prescribing medications
Can you prescribe medication?
When clinically appropriate, yes.
Do you prescribe controlled substances?
When clinically appropriate, yes. Controlled medication prescribing requires regular follow-up and careful adherence to practice policies.
Why does my pharmacy app say there are no refills?
For many controlled medications, that is expected. Retail pharmacies often require patients to call and request the next prescription on file rather than use a standard refill button.
Understanding different mental health providers
What is the difference between a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and a Psychiatrist?
Both can diagnose mental health conditions, create treatment plans, and prescribe medication. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor or doctor of osteopathic medicine who completed medical school and specialty training in psychiatry. A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice nurse with graduate-level psychiatric training who also evaluates, diagnoses, and treats mental health conditions, including medication management.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
Psychiatrists and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners focus on psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and medication management. Psychologists typically focus on therapy, psychological assessment, and testing. If a patient needs services outside our scope, we can help direct them to the right resources.
Communication and urgent concerns
How do I contact the office between appointments?
Text is preferred. You can text or call (757) 992-9600 or email admin@chesapeakebaypsych.com.
What should I do in a mental health emergency?
